Five Ways to Quickly Improve Your Mood

Sometimes life throws you a curveball and you can’t help but let it affect your mood. Whether you want it to or not, it can control you, it can affect how your day will pan out, basically you are at the mercy of a nasty, bad mood.

But there are ways to combat the power of a bad mood.

1. Smile

Even if the last thing you want to do is smile, make yourself do it anyway. Instead of crying or getting angry, smile. You may not mean it right away, but you can convince yourself to look on the bright side even on the darkest days.

2. Surround yourself with people who make you happy

Friends and family can be a lifeline when you’re feeling down. If you have a friend or a group of friends who consistently make you laugh, you should keep them close to you. If watching your children play makes you happy, get involved with them as they have fun. You will too.

3. Get some sunshine

A lot of people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (aptly called SAD) where the long winter months can cause the blues. Spend some time in the sunshine whenever it’s available. If it isn’t, there are special lights called SAD lamps that can mimic the sun’s rays and help lift your mood.

4. Exercise and healthy diet

This seems to be the cure for everything, these days. The better you feel about yourself, the better you will feel all around. Healthy foods can affect your mood. Eating a diet of trans fats and sugars can cause depression.

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other good foods can reverse the sad listlessness. Exercise can help even out Serotonin levels, keeping depression at bay.

5. Get organized

Keeping a clean house or work space can help alleviate stress and anxiety. If your house is a complete wreck, you won’t be able to relax in it. The same goes for the office.

If your desk is a disaster, your work will likely reflect it. Keeping things tidy and in order can give you a sense of control, thereby keeping your bad moods far away.

Going Forward …

Turning your frown upside down can be tough, especially on the really bad days, but you can have power over your emotions. Your feelings are important, therefore you should pay close attention to them.

It is crucial that you keep yourself happy. Explore your options when you’re feeling down, and most of all, have fun wherever you can find it.
